Pissed off, didn't get near the car tonight, Missus had me fitting a handsfree kit in her car! Nightmare of a job hiding/routing cables. Roll on tomorrow, I have to get the body off an start welding the pans.

Missed out on the morning as had to service a guys motocross forks so only got stuck in after lunch an what a nightmare it turned out to be. Here was me thinking I'd have the 18+4+2+2 bolts undone in no time an have the body off ready to start cutting the old pans out. Nope. The bolts were fiberglassed over an once I dug them out they just spun as the captive nuts had rusted away from the sill. Add to that the fact that the whole underside of the body was sprayed with a layer of fiberglass. Add to that the fact that a lovely formed fiberglass outer sill had been not only glassed but pop riveted to the pan meaning Ive basically to cut the body off the pan! Horrible dusty, itchy job.

Under luggage comp, above gearbox - the whole underside of GZR is glassed!

Chipping away at fiberglass lower channel.

The lower glass channel sections!

About 30mins hacking to uncover the frame head lower, thank god its solid, still a bit more to go.

Thank god for the lift though......

I cant wait to just get on with the metal work.............

Holy sheet he must have spent weeks fiberglassing it.I must see if I can find pics from when I bought it,the wings were blended into the body with fiberglass and there was a 6inch deep splitter grafted onto the front.

It's feckin depressing, the hours I'm going to have to spend getting rid of it, it's tough shit too. I can't believe the effort he went to. To totally cover the car in fibreglass would have welded everything properly for half the effort. The fact that he made the lower section of the heater channel, bonded it to the top section an riveted it to the floor. It seems to have had an upper sections welded in between the doors but they're only bonded in under the rear quarter, about 40cm without a weld.

Then there's the post Riggsi repairs, new metal over the fibreglass!!!!! Dunno who but we won't go there!

LOL I said we wouldnt go there regarding naming an shaming, but whoever was responsible for the fiberglass is the reason why the car has been passed around so much.

Anyway I was away all weekend at a wedding but managed to get some work done after I got back.

I added some more bracing as I was worried about it flexing with both the roof an channels being so bad.

I want to make a removeable rear valance to make it easier to work on the motor etc so I marked both sides of the rear valance as best I could as it's not 100% true due to the filler etc.
P1140385.jpg

Then I cut it off...
P1140386.jpg

This 20cm fell out, not a single bit of metal in it!
P1140389.jpg

I spent a good bit of time trying to figure out what was the best way to cut it an how it will be made quick release, in the end I cut it pretty close to the firewall to allow the most access an straight to make it line up easier.
P1140388.jpg

Then I got stuck in an started hacking away the fiberglass where it has joined the body to the pan, removed the last bolts an wires an finally got the body off the pan!

No I can start removing all the filler/fiberglass/dirt/rust in readiness to weld in the repair panels.

There's nothing impressive done yet, technically stripping it is the easy bit, anyone can do that. I can't wait till I've removed all the filler an fiberglass so I can start the build properly.
