I've enough to build a trike, an afternoon would build that, Ive bits to get going on the soapbox but something else has popped up that I need to devote my time to. Either way I could knock a rolling chassis up really quick just to get out for the first one!

berg kart wheels?
curving the brake "shoes" so they match the circumference of the tyre would give you more of a contact patch with the tyre thus increasing friction maybe? How about lining the shoes with tyre rubber, like a lump of old car tyre tread bolted to the shoe maybe...

Yep.
Good idea, I'll try a bit of tyre rubber to add grip. I was going to try some skateboard grip tape but was worried about it damaging, or wearing through the tyre. Rubber should do the trick.
