so who fancies a go at building a car to a specification for a bit of tight and competitive drag racing ?

a rough specification

eligible cars- beetle ,ghia,type3Unmodified floor pan with beam or McPhersonstruts , with full working brakes .
Unmodified shell , doors, boot and bonnet can be lightened/fiberglass , extra bracing, stiffening, cage allowed . seat belt or harness must be fitted . windscreen must beoriginal glass. Other windows can be replaced with plastics .
Tyres / wheels no restriction .
Transmission swingaxle or irs no restriction to ratio’s .
Engine max capacity1641cc
Max Bore 87mm max stroke 69mm

Cylinder heads, max valve size 32mm exhaust, 35.5 mm inlet these are standard size.
Heads can be modified in anyway so long as the valve size remains stock.

No restrictions to the following
Crankshaft , conrods, flywheel, clutch, camshaft, valve rockers.
No restrictions to exhaust system. or carburettors .

these cars would run in the 18.9 to 16.9 second range .

please discuss ..

Would this be a championship thing i.e based on competing for points over x amount of rounds or am I looking to deep into this.:)
If so how many rounds are we looking at and is it only for vdubs?

Happy days! Mine has metal added in to make her longer and the beam extender isn't light. id say its about the normal weight.

Fibreglass wings, bumpers would be ok too,I presume??
yes.

my ideas was to keep the class cheap and competitive , reason for 1641 is no case machining needed, so anyone can build an engine without specialist tools. stock valve sizes keep things under control cost wise , you just need a dremel and start porting .
a good example is pancho's ghia engine, 1641cc with an engle 120 camshaft stock heads ported out, standard crank, rods, flywheel , rockers. a pair of weber idf carbs and he is running low 17seconds , with a bit more refinement to the cars suspension etc he should better his times substantially.

there are only about six or seven drag events here in Ireland a year , haven't given it any thought regards a championship just putting out the feelers . I suppose a 2cv running a 1641 vw engine would be considered lol.

I'm hoping that this would be a " heads up" style and not "Bracket"??? If I go to the expense of building a car I have an added $2500 to ship also so need to see what class it will be. This sounds like a SSS 36 hp class for Bonneville. Great idea and everyone runs on the honor system.

By the way this is an awesome idea. I was going to bring a rail buggy and run 10 to 11 second 1/4 mile times. I don't want to do that now. I think I can have much more fun in this class and be competitive. And maybe with the money that I can save I can put up some "purse money ? It won't be much maybe $100 a race day for lowest ET in this class based on 6 drag days.

its only an idea at the moment .

if we can get 9+ cars to each meet then we can have 4-6 rounds of bump spot qualifying for 8 places ,then a heads up quarter, semi and final knockout .

if we get 17+ cars then bump spot qualifying for 16 places and add in a first elimination round , then quarter ,semi, and finals.

Good idea Dave! Every time I heard mention of 1600 class I thought someone could just turn up in a Buggy/Rail/Formula Vee an a steel bodied car wouldn't stand a chance!
As long as no-one starts spending silly money on Doherty style Vee engines it should be good.
Body mods would have to be thought out but at the same time Ravens Rod is at no more of an advantage than Tetnus.

Would it be too much to have this class street legal? Possibly harder for Uk/NI cars, but have them run working lights just to make it fairer on those who do have to drive to the event. Perhaps a street eliminator road trip in the morning.
Also are you going to state pump gas only?

I would also like to see regs drawn up for all classes before Drag Day 2 just so people have time to build a car to suit a specific class. Nothing as detailed as this class but basic Body type , Bus, Bug or other an engine size, similar to this years classes. They worked well.

With the interest from this years event I hope there would be no need for people to drive water cooled cars as spaces will fill up fast.
