Well that was a shocker........., what a great weekend an thanks to Ben an Dave for organizing everything once again. Big shout to my Dad for building up our engine an sorting the jetting on the Alfa Webers. I had been so worried about them with such little testing time before the event. As it turns out, the jetting was spot on an the car ran clean all the way up the strip. The issues we had were off idle but in real world circumstances (driving) it wasn't noticable. After using the loaner motor last year it was always going to be an anticlimax using a 1600, fund weren't there an neither was time. Dad didn't even want to risk spitting the case after we discovered it was full of water. If it blows, it blows! The heads an valves were stripped an rebuilt, barrels were honed, ring gaps checked an it was buttoned back together. Tinware was binned, type3 cooler, CSP linkage an 36 IDFs with 40 stacks. J tubes an a merged header exiting through a stinger an that was it. 3 oil changes trying to eliminate the sludge an we were on the strip.
The first run I red lighted as I hadn't listened about pre stage only so I waited a few seconds an launched. The car felt good so instead of taking it easy I held the shoe in a watched for the oil light. When I got the timing slip, 21sec I wasn't arsed, then I saw my terminal speed was 80mph an the Zipper bug beside me was 73. His 60ft was 5 seconds faster. Oh shit, I tapped Dad on the shoulder an said do the maths! 21-5=? He said no way, 18 an he'd be happy.
My next run an I tried harder an Boom! 16.4, over the moon. An the final run before the break, 16.1. I was amazed at the difference to me an the other 1600's. If it blew up after that I didn't care, I would have ended the day an gone home happy!
I cruised the finals as I knew I could but in the actually final I wasnt sharp an as it was mine to loose I paniced, worrying about it jumping out of gear an if I'd left the handbrake on, so was in a self induced fluster as the green light came on. I reeled in the Zipper car an passed him with a few car lengths to spare by the end.
The car ran faultless all day, I couldn't get near the 15.9 but I reckon gearing/wheel size might have helped that. I can believe the time an how it compared with cars in bigger classes, beating Gtis an all but 2 of the up to 2000 bugs. Just mad.
An if anyone wants/doubts, the engines there, tear it down if you want to measure it. It is a totally stock longbock as VW intended. The car however, we just added lightness!

All credit goes to the Lazy crew for creating that monster, it sounded great and running a 17.2 was unbelievable. When i heard Ben announcing your time i thought what a shame if you hadn't made it up .... took great pleasure in knowing i played a very very small part in getting you there.

BTW ... spotted the legendary '58 going through Gorey this evening on the way to Brians (i assume?)

Well Tsar this is exactly what we did last year with the Baja we ran a stock 1600 wich we borrowed from Dave we fitted twin 36 webbers and ditched as much weight as possible we ran a 17.8 with full tinware and fan . so it goes to show you can have fun on a budget . this year we had a 1915 cc engine built by Dave cant remember the exact specs but it has 1300 heads and still running the 36s we ditched even more weight and got into the 14s so we went home happy

Any links to that 4 prop helicopter camera flying up and down the track? Would be great to see racing from above...

You guys did great John, delighted for ya. What's the next step with the baja?

thanks Tsar . not sure what we will do with it next . i would like to paint it and get rid of the Baja kit but not sure yet then just make it lighter .engine will stay as it is for now .i kinda like the idea of chasing a lower time with the 1915 .

this is the list of final qualifying positions at lunch time

qual runs.JPG

and this is the knockout competition after lunchtime

ladder.JPG

there were other times run after the competition but I don't have them on spread sheet.

the error in class 4 appears to be caused by a false red light, giving car 44 the win , this was resolved by a second final between car 42 and 54 , with 42 taking the win.
