I highly recommend gloves, broke out the welder the other day but didn't really notice the temperature dropping(working outside),few burns I didn't even feel..although that could be a good thing:)

Burns are the least of your worries when welding with exposed skin. There is a high risk of getting skin cancer from all the UV rays.

What did I tell you about talking about insurance, Mikey! I'll have a bucket with me with a strong handle for the next time I see you! ;)

I gave the welder a shot today on an old exhaust I had off the MG. Good mix of different thicknesses of metal on it, and I got a good few decent weld lines done on it. The machine is brilliant. I found it pretty much as easy to use as Grahams €1200 machine. Ok the finish of the welds isn't as good but I'd put that partly down to me using gasless wire and the exhaust wasn't as clean and paint free as I reckoned it needed to be but it was only a trial run. I did put a few holes in the metal but I was able to fill them again. It was a bit of craic anyway! Welding is addictive! I'll be sticking all sorts of bits of metal together around the house now.

Gasless wire always gives a messier weld than regular wire. You have to give it a tickle with the grinder afterwards

I was down with BOC off the Long Mile Road yesterday Ross and they've small bottles of gas for sale, you don't need
an account or a contract - the bigger bottles you would need an account.

What dollar

Don't quote me but I think he was saying around the €100 mark, which I though was a bit pricey but the two gas bottles
we got refilled were €70 so probaly not too bad.

The only thing is if your doing a proper project you would need a large bottle.

80 for the bottle and 50 for each refill so 130 first out lay and thats from a welding suppliers getting them from the UK. There is no rent and it is exchange on the refill. I've had a few gasless ones and for the gauge of metal I'm working with I need the cooling affect of the gas aswell.

Disposable bottles last minutes. Waste of time.
About 7mins of constant welding depending on flow rate. They sell these because most people doing hobby work only spot/plug weld so get abit of time out of them. This all depends on application really. If your going to use anymore than 2 half size rent free cylinders a year your better off with the full size BOC job as it will work out better for you.

I have two of them little cylinders kicking around if you want to give them ago and a new reg for them. I had two gasless hobby migs and just got rid of them they never worked out for me. The clarke you got gets great reviews and was looking at one myself but given the past I decided to go to the next level with it. I'm getting a semi pro one that is ideal for auto work up to 7mm mild steel (30-180 amp)at around €500 it ant cheap but its a one off invest ment and given the light gauge of the 500 It had to be a gas mig. I can put the gasless wire in it but its set up for gas out of the box.

Rent is a pain in the arse, we're paying €164 to rent 2 small oxy/ace bottles an we dOnt get enough use out of them to cover the rent. I've a 1/2large bottle for the mig that I've used for years at home and I've made a lot with it. Full sized bottles will last me 3-6months in worth depending on use.

I've been told the rent free ones aren't that big but Ross I don't see you using more than one a year if your using it for home use. Just be careful with your gas settings, some guys just waste the stuff by turning it up too much.

Im no expert, in fact Im a welding novice, but i recently got one of these which seems to go ok:

http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Rhyas-Turbo-...909?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3a7498898d

The casing and handle seems identical to an older Clarke model and i got it (delivered for €200

I'm seriously considering one of these, the cheapest auto dark helmet I can find and once the budget recovers a bottle of rent free gas. Don't know what gas connections I'll need (regulator etc) though

anyone gone for this? 135 should be grand for sheet and sheet to thicker metal. I won't be tackling any chassis stuff or anything over 2mm really

I got one of these
MIG160-300_zps3f24aaab.jpg

From these
http://myworld.ebay.ie/sportsshop_de/?_trksid=p4340.l2559

€170 delivered

It's fairly good for what it is (a cheap welder). Amp settings are 0-8 instead of the max/min 1/2 on others and the torch is good (not euro) and the feeding mechanism seems to be good quality. so far so good, got some welds down that did the job and ground to finish but need to get a bottle and regulator next
