[Wanted: Car] Need a beetle

Morning!

So I just moved to Galway with my family I found myself in a need of a car. But as I have been a VWs owner for over 10 years I cannot just buy any sort of car. Well... I can but I don't want. So what about beetle for daily driver? Or typ3 or typ4... Weather seems to be fine enough and You don't have that much of a snow and ice that the roads need to be salted (as they do back in Estonia)

So my question - where can I find something to drive? Budget is small. The cheaper, the better. But I want the car to be driver and legal (should be with NCT). The look is not important, can be with dents/rust (again - as long it's legal), messy interior etc. I know a bit about these cars and aircooled engines so I can do some repairs myself and I know where to get the parts

Is it possible to get (and if yes then where) anything like that? Let's say around 1.5-2k? Anyone knows anyone who has a spare ready-to-go aircooled laying around?

welcome Dooker!! true, we don't suffer from EXTREME weather but they do put salt on the roads at every available opportunity during the winter. Oh, in case you hadn't noticed, it's ALWAYS damp here, even in the summer and old VWs don't last long before the rust sets in. If you have any way of storing it in a garage in the nights or whenever you're not using it, you should.

This one is in Galway and they are asking €1500. Maybe someone in the Galway area knows the car???

looks very strange on that beetle. Where are the seams/joins? It looks like they fibreglassed the whole thing up solid but curiously left the access hole wide open. I'd baulk at the sight of that TBH :(

Thanks for the tips. That Galway's 1200 looks a bit "odd". Still - anyone know anything more about that one?
And the light blue looks promising. It's also my wife's favorite color so big plus there :)

Any car registered befire 1980 doesn't need a NCT.

A good type 3 or 4 would probaly be out of your budget and not many around in road worthy condition

For what your after i would of said a budget if 2.5k to 3k

Bring someone who knows beetles with you to view

Mayo one gone.
May not be easy to run a vintage as your main vehicle, insurance etc. Usually these policies are on the basis that it's a secondary car.
Maybe a Mexican would be an option...

Damn, the Galway one is sold too. So back to the drawing board for me :)

The daily driver in my case will be 2-3 drives in week actually

Saw that one too, but the "Car has had a nut and bolt rebuild" in description gave me doubt that it's out of my price range right now

If you want a beetle (or any older car ) as your ONLY car to use as a daily driver then insurance will be an issue .most if not all air cooled VWs are insured on classic car policy's which require you to own and use a modern car as your daily driver.this situation is not being helped by quite a few insurance companies now not wanting to quote for cars between 10 and 15 years old .
It would be wise to check and make sure you can get insurance before you buy a car you may not be able to use

I think you'll really need 4,000 plus to get something that'd suit your needs. If it's going to be a daily driver you don't want a project. Ideally a rust free bug with strong engine and proven mechanics would be perfect.

Would you look at a MK1/Mk2 Golf?

Classic look, reliable for daily use, and might be easier to insure as main car, should get something decent for your budget too.
