the reg on it is CZJ which according to Wikipedia is:

but if it was a '66 it would have 6V panels all round. It looks like it might be a '68-'71 car but then, what's with the earlier reg?

I think you're right. The UK and some euro markets had base models different to ours in that they were considered like a run-out model - clearing out the parts bins more like! They often had separate petrol gauges and an assortment of 6v parts as they even had 6v sparks up to 1971. Oddly, some had ragtops which would be very cool. That looks like one such 68-71 base/standard models with short headlining, 2 spoke s/wheel and any shite that was left on the shelves at the time.

The great thing about VW and their model history is nobody will ever know exact year specs because that's the way they did things when they had an excess of spares!

Still a cheap car! :)

It does'nt look half bad! Its a standard model which is abit strange as that would have been the last model to get the later body style but it could have got a face lift at some stage to make it look newer as that was the done thing if you had a few bob. I like the period window demister we used to have a few of them kicking around.

We have two of them in Dublin Civil Defence they are an interesting drive and will go almost anywhere including on water. The ground print of less than a mans foot so ideal for snow or marsh etc Bought during the bad snow but originally for flood etc. Civil Defence HQ is opposite hueston.
