needed a rear silencer for the Passat so enquired at Halfords today. Also made a cheeky request about their trade cards, explained that I restored cars and did a bit of backyard mechanicing on my own cars. Also dropped into the conversation that I spent a lot of money at the local traditional motor factors and would spend at Halfords if I could avail of the discount. I was told that they had run out of cards but would offer me the trade price on the silencer. Turns out it was a few quid cheaper with the AXA discount so the trade discount on exhaust silencers is less than 15%.

I ordered and paid for it at the AXA price.

I also enquired about a price for a battery for the Audi and the trade price came in at significantly less than the AXA discount. Trade discount 30%, AXA 15%.

I'm hesitant to support Halfords over the local motor factors because Halfords is "the man" but I think I'll be spreading my custom about a bit more than before.

I used to work for a large motor factors years ago - the markup on exhausts was massive....

Money is money and I'd buy from halfords when the price is right (their oil specials can be very good value) but I reckon that you'll find that your local guy will beat their prices in most cases - you do get a discount there I take it?

not guaranteed Aidan, it's a big enough local motor factors, Bradshaws in Portlaoise, it's a hundred yards from work. They have maybe 10 fellas who work the counters and it depends on who you get and how much you spend whether you get trade or not. I always feel like a scab for asking though...

Bradshaws in Newbridge is the same - there's one lad who always gives a bit off and one particular lad who never will (he's alway's free, strangely enough), and its more complicated than a good game of poker to time a casual arrival at the counter when he's not likely to nab you.

I wouldn't hesitate to ask for a discount, especially knowing the markup. God knows, if you stand at that counter long enough, you'll hear things that'll make your hair stand on end. (I was on the other side of one for long enough - the amount of potential fraud that you'd be asked to participate in is nothing short of sickening). A person asking for an honest discount is refreshing. Its the way you ask, most of the time.

That Jack is going for 53 euro ATM. Life time warranty fucking Bargin
I got one of the wolf ones a couple of years ago and its starting to fail a little (by fail i mean slowly let the car down)
Wolf has gone to the great recession in the sky

One thing about these jacks is that the lowest height is to high to fit under some jacking points in a beetle. when i had the square i had to use a smaller jack under the beam to get it high enough to put my bigger jack in. but the other side of this is you can jack the car high enough from the center of the rear forks to take an engine out in a few minutes

I got a pair of axle stands off a crowd on the internet a while ago and the jack I already had is able to lift the car high enough to put it on the stands, so I am able to work underneath the car now. So at least I will be able to do the few simple jobs that I will be doing on the car.

@ Trev, in alot of places trade discount is only 10% and no matter where you buy your parts you still have to shop around, we use OTTO alot, the local supplier, Autocare and Eurocarparts in Belfast!! The was a differenct of nearly €100 between Eurocarparts and OTTO for the fuelpump on the Boxster, Otto was dearer but instock, it took a week of messing from ECP but it was better to wait than spend the extra money!!!

You'll often find lately that main dealer stuff is cheaper that the 'factor' price too!!! We've seen this alot lately with VW, a mate got a pair of genuine handbrake cables for his T4 cheaper than factor!!! My Dad works for a large Fiat and Opel dealer in the Parts Dept so is always on the phone looking for the best price!!! Opel even do really good deals on oil!!!

Shop around!!!

Forgot to mention, I used to work for a company doing car audio and styling!! We got an account with autoleads, the people who sell the audio wiring and dash panels etc, we used to add 100% to some items and still be cheaper than halfords!!!! I sell bike parts etc and can beat halfords prices on the same cleaning product line!! Theyre not always cheapest!!!

up north :)
the lifetime warranty makes it

just double check deckie, their very good with their words, ive a couple of sets of their ratchet spanners, when i got the first set, it said lifetime warranty, on second set (the exact same type) said lifetime warranty too, with the wee asterix saying pto............ on the back it was lifetime warranty on the spannner not the ratchet mechanism. i would imagine that the jack will have a wee asterix there too, or on the packaging it will mention the warranty doesnt cover the ram or something.

my 2.5 ton high lift jack twisted under the weight of the camper and I brought it back. The 12 year old "manager" looked a little nervous exchanging it for a brand new one but did it anyway. Like for like, no hassle. Perfect ;)
