Set of Marathon wheels & centres for sale

I bought 4 Marathon wheels & centres for my '74 before I gave up on the whole idea. The wheels need to be spruced up - personally I'd powdercoat them and be done with it. The centres are in good nick - one has a small ding and another has a scuffed logo.

185 euro for the lot.

For those who missed out on Mikey's Marathon caps, here's a consolation prize. They caps are not as perfect as Mikey's but I'd rate them as 4 out of 5.

If they don't sell by the end of the weekend I'm going to put the caps up on The Samba. Once they sell the wheels will be F.O.C. to anyone who wants them.

You will have no problem fitting the wheels on the front with discs, you will have a problem getting the front caps on though.

I've disks up front, and had to get the lip of the disc (where the wheel sits on) skimmed no more than 2MM.

I had genuine disks on the beetle when I got it, and had to replace them andgot spurious.
If you could get genuine disks you wouldn't have to skim them.

If your disks are original you'll be fine. If there repo you may have to attack them with a grinder.

I've had the same craic with disks before, they helpfully include a ring in the centre of the bolt face to rest the wheel up on while you fit the bolts. Grand if you're running stock steelies with chrome caps but it either has to be machined off on a lathe or you have to get a thin wheel spacer to allow you to fit anything other than stock wheels. I've done both at various stages: machined off the ring and used spacers.

**EDIT**, is ANYONE using 40 year old original disks on their car still? If so then well done, that's some achievement!! Oh, I wouldn't be inclined to go at them with a grinder, taking the disks to your local precision engineer would be a better job and should be a quick and cheap fix

I think the ones I took off were on for at least ten years as the last owner did small milage.
Trev if you could find NOS disks would they be ok? although would make more sense to get cheaper, better, easy fit disks off Jon.

Thanks for the offer horizontal, no plans to travel . Love the look of the wheels I know ill regret not snapping these up. Just more work than I want to take on at the moment.
That said out of couiosity
is there much work in this ? And machining the discs will this compromise performance? Have to think of my 2 yr old co driver!

Is there anywhere that does this type of work?

No compromise to performance or safety in having the ring machined off. It's purely to aid mounting the wheel when you change a Tyre.

@Mikey, new old stock disks will be 100% as long as they're not badly surface rusted and pitted. That last derby I did- they have a very particular front disk that's obsolete now. I discovered Otto had a nos pair on their shelf that had sat there for years. They were badly surface rusted but cleaned up well with a wire wheel in the grinder.

Re machining off the ring, look up a local precision engineer in your area, every town has one. Quick and easy job on a lathe.

Thats what I did with mine - perfect job. Don't need them skimmed now with the 944s.
