what make of pump is it? If it's a facet AFAIK they don't have points. I had a similar problem with my facet pump. There's a "shuttle" that moves back and forth through the bore in the middle of the pump. Somehow the shuttle had developed a burr on one of its edges and was sticking intermittently. A rap from the handle of a screwdriver would get it going again but it would pack up randomly again. So I took it apart and discovered the problem. A light tickle with a needle file and it was grand and has been grand since. Hope that helps :)

Thanks Trev. Symptoms sound the same and the tap of the screwdriver was called on yesterday on the way back out to the clubhouse. It's not a facet AFAIK but I'll know when I'm out there again.

If its anything like an SU fuel pump, I know a thing or two about these. I rebuilt the one in my MG. The points sometimes get a sort of skin on them which prevents them from conducting properly. Also, the rocker pin for the points can bend or come loose. Also, if the gauze screen in the outlet gets blocked up, it will not function properly and may only work intermittently. Theyre really not complicated, and can be taken apart easily and faults found fairly quickly. Just remember how everything is wired up inside it.

Yeah, Donal said to give the points a light rub.

The points can be adjusted, if theyre not throwing over properly. It requires taking the pump body off the electromagnet housing and turning the diaphragm. To adjust them properly, you hold in the diaphragm against the spring, turn it in until the points just throw over and then give it another 2 1/2 turns. Then test it by pushing the diaphragm in and out and see that the points are working correctly. This is of course assuming that it is an SU pump. They are a good pump but they're not maintenance free.

If it's the same pump I had it is a Facet.

The pump that was in the Oval is still in it. I sold the car to Eoin with the pump still mounted up front. I totally forgot to take it out with the engine and it wasn't until the engine went back in and Donal asked me where it was. After a few minutes of head scratching the D'OH moment kicked in for me but luckily Donal had a new one at hand!...........I'd be lost without Donal.

I jumped in with Coxy who promised to share his scarf if I got cold! .........Thanks to Padraig for the lift back to my own car in the 356. I'm well jealous!

I believe mine wasn't your first choice of car, nor was Padraigs you old slapper Kev :swear:
Rumour has it you went straight for Brendan's car because he was the only one with heating!...............I don't blame you, converse shoes and a drafty Beetle or 356 don't work well together and if Brendan was going on the run I would have hopped in with him too! His was the only car not to have totally fogged up windows when we got there! I gotta get me some heating!
