It looks a little rough under the bonnet/boot and looks like the number has been reversed (should be 970 SYI) but that wasn't uncommon in the day.

i wouldn`t be put off by the condition under the bonnet, it looks reasonably good, if not very good for a 60 year old car. for that money though i`d want a car all the one colour. especially with a pre 68 bug as you have to open the bonnet every time you need to fill the tank. lack of chrome trim on the window rubbers is also a pet hate of mine, it`s not hard to get that right

How come this reg is SYI for a 57 beetle when my 74 1303 is also SYI?
Is it because it was imported in the 70's.
Was there no age related plates back then?

Looks like it was imported around the same time as your registration series was current - imports just got the next reg number in line when they were registered - there weren't (normally) any gaps in older sequences that could be used to backfill. I'd put good money on either the number being reversed on that car to make it look older or else its flying a flag of convenience (lets say :) )

And there's me hoping I had the worlds first 1957 1303..Damn
Thanks for crushing my dreams Aidan ;)

Thats interesting actually, that the age of the car didn't matter so a fiftys car was reg as a seventies.
I guess back then people weren't as hung up on the age of a car as they are nowadays.

Sorry about that :)

One of my memories of the '70s is that most people were hanging on financially by their fingernails. Most people were happy if their car started - stopping was less important. I know that times are rough now but back then people didn't eat out much, grab a coffee or have much in the line of beauty treatments (for the ladies....). Having a car was a bonus, the age of it wasn't quite as important.
