Anybody here know of anyone selling a subaru beetle? I think I might go all the way altogether

you can't just "get one". Most of them are home-built by enthusiasts. Scour vwkd.co.uk and volkszone.com but be prepared to do the import dance. TBH, I'd be going for a good, proven aircooled beetle. MUCH less hassle at the end of the day. And that's coming from a fella that has a half-completed Subaru beetle languishing in the back of the shed.
They don't come up for sale often, and the ones that do are often unfinished - and I'd say there is probably a good reason why.

The hassle as far as I can see about buying someone else's Subaru conversion is reverse engineering the conversion any time you come across a problem. In a well-engineered conversion EVERYTHING needs to be modified: engine mounting, gearbox, drive shafts, brakes, steering, ALL the electrics, plumbing has to be built from scratch etc. you'd need a dossier of the origin of all the parts in case they need replacements.
Unless you build it yourself it'll be a lot of hassle. Actually, to build it yourself will also be a lot of hassle.

first place i`d like to try a scooby engine and box conversion would be in a 914 ! loads of room in the engine bay as it`s big enough for the type4 motor or the 6 cylinder in the 914/6. the box fits well too. 5 speeds mid engined and anywhere from 2-300 hp would be nuts in a yoke that size
