Coxy,

You are not far wrong! It was a nightmare getting it all sorted. Things that caused me grief before i laid it up were -

- not getting a hard brake pedal after installing the rear discs. Solved with a bigger bore master cylinder
- not having an accelerator pedal -solved when i eventually found out that the LHD ones for sale on most websites are also the RHD...
- Accelerator pedal not deflecting correctly - solved when i realised the floor bracket was bent ever so slightly
- Never being able to ge the dellortos to run correctly - solved when i stripped them and found that the previous "builder" had omiitted several o-rings
- rusty fuel tank - solved with electrolsis. Quite a satisfying job too.
- chassis fuel line past its best - solved when i bought the bently manual and found there was a VW procedure to replace it
- wipers not wiping - solved when i bit the bullet and spent €150 on new blades and arms
- engine overheating - solved by buying a new engine, taking out the Scat tin i had, getting some original tin from emilio, getting it sand blasted and coated in tallaght powder coat and watching the Awesome Powder you tube videos and installing ALL of the correct parts.
- Charging problem - solved with new alternator
- Ignition - new pertronix

I spent the past couple of months fixing all the little niggly snags i had, took it on a 400 mile trip last weekend from Dublin to Dunmore East via the Dublin and Wiclow Mountains, then onto Kinsale and Cork, and then back to Dublin on the motorway. Car performed perfectly, and the torque from the 1600 with the Dellortos is great.

I got closure on the project by getting the car into the condition i always wanted it to be in. Before i went on the trip i told my wife I'd never sell it, but on the trip I drove a mates Triumph Spitfire, and decided what i really wanted at this stage in my life - now 41 (bought the Karmann when i was 25)- was a Classic Britsh Sports Car.

Looking at the prices of Ghias in the UK, i thnik mine is competitively priced, but as it is customised, it wont be to everyones taste.
