I know most of you guys have direct experience with Aircooled VWs but many of you have a chequered past with some other old cars behind you.

I need a good pair of number plate lights for the Audi, they sit in the bumper and point upwards towards the number plate. I haven't looked but I reckon the bulb holder sections of mine should be OK, they're galvanised so I need a lens/cover bit at the very least so it looks nice on the outside.

I have an enquiry in with a German NOS collector who may have a pair (fingers crossed!) but in the meantime if anyone knows of anything that might suit, even from other marques of classic scrap. I'd rather have some decent looking "wrong" lights in the bumper than shitty "correct" ones. Even if I got the wrong ones now to fill the gap I'll keep looking for the correct ones later.

The genuine ones look like this:

any ideas what else may have had a similar setup so I can go hunting?

Have you looked here?

I think that you're looking for a 'kennzeichenleuchte' or a plate light like this Coupe one:

http://trshop.audi.de/konakart/SelectProd.do?prodId=11153&manufacturer=manufacturer&category=Elektrische+Ausr%C3%BCstung&name=KENNZEICHENLEUCHTE&model=0001

They don't seem to have the exact one that you want but if you have the part number you may get further than I did.

I'm sure one of us can rustle up a German or Swiss delivery address. There's a Swiss resident member on Type 2 Ireland I think...

Trev can't remember if you have plastic or chrome bumpers but for chrome a 356B number plate light would be similar and for a plastic bumper Mk3 escort or 90's transit van one might do. In fact if your in no rush and can wait til June I have an NOS ford one you can have.

Cheers

Steve

I've sifted through the Audi Tradition site alright, to no avail :(

Steve, it has stainless steel bumpers but I wouldn't mind a black plastic "stopgap" number plate light, it uses two though. I'm hoping to have the car finished by the end of May though.

Ross, I'll look into the golf ones. I thought they were under the boot handle though... Mk1 Fiesta and Mk1 Polo have a similar setup. I'll keep hunting!!

thanks for the input :)

Actually just thinking my dead up my backside, think dolomite ones are round, d'oh! Mk3 / 4 Cortina?? The MK5 had ones similar but plastic, think earlier ones were chrome.
