I have a budget of €5k.
Thanks

Send Rocky on here a PM - don't know if he has anything for sale but not a lot with a Karmann Ghia badge on it moves around here without him knowing about it...:D

Like Tony mentioned above, you are realistically looking at a project with a budget of €5k and it will probably require a similar figure if not more to put it right.

Despite what kvinyl said  I don’t actually know of anything at the moment.
The yellow one that Pete sold to Cork a while ago was back up for sale earlier in the year, it was close to your budget but did required some bodywork afaik.

My advice would be to hold off until you have more money and meanwhile scan the forums to see what comes up. Realistically for something nice you’ll need at least €10k, that would really open up your options.

I bought a solid KG 66 in Ireland four years ago for 4500 euro, It was a good running car but needed tidying up. I did a lot of the fixing up myself and was blessed that the car was a decent colour I could live with thus saving me a full respray and maybe 1500 euro. I eventually spent about 1500 on it thus totally setting me back 6000 in total. I drove it as a running resto. Today I would say that the initial cost would be 6000, thus pushing it out of your budget of 5k. A few things have emerged to me .... A solid if somewhat tatty car is a good way to start. Engine is not that important but excessive rust will cost you dear if you are not a proficient welder and panel beater. Fact. If you buy one within your budget and are prepared to get your hands dirty you will get to your liking over the course of maybe two years at your own pace. Realistically, the best bet is the US and as the others have rightly said, the Samba is a good place to start. Importing to Ireland seems to be penal with VAT and import duties ....there are others more expert here that may be able to help you. I wish you well in your quest M

Please pm me. I just came across a 72 Ghia Running Barn find. No rust but it's Yellow and has a small dent in the nose. Did I mention no rust? It's just about 6k euros landed in Dublin.

Roadcow, looks like great find. Do you have any idea what Irish import duty and vat would add to the initial acquisition and shipping cost?
From what I hear both costs are added , ie value of car and shipping , and then levied with an import duty plus vat on top of that.
Glad you are keeping an eye out for some good CAlifornia dream machines!

All of my All on pricrs are just that, "all in" Delivered to Belfast and trucked to your door, VAT and shipping paid by me included in the price. You take care of registering in your name and MOT if it applies.

The all in price delivered from UK to the Republic with duties paid appears reasonable to me (ie Belfast to the Republic) . As far as I know, and I stand to be corected , there is no import duty for transactions like this within EU states (as long as Britian remains within the EU). I believe registration for a classic to be 200 euro. NCT is not obligitory for pre 1981 cars. I would appreciate if anyone would point out any inaccuracies in my assessment of this situation. Again, I will say, from experience, that a solid sunny clime car is a great basis to start from.

small point and wouldn't affect the importation of a KG but the NCT exemption is for pre 1980 cars. I.e. up to 31/12/79.

at the moment...
