I have to admit defeat. I cannot register my Golf GTD that I just bought on Ebay in France because its tied up in beaurocracy. The car suffered an accident in the hands of its previous owner, and an insurance assessor classified the car as "Not economically repairable". This now means that the carte grise (reg cert) is blocked and cannot be changed to new ownership. It may be possible to register the car outside France, where the laws are a bit more sensible and there isn't such a big deal made out of everything, but I cannot guarantee this. Hence, I am offering this car for parts.
OK so the car:
Its a 1991 Mk2 GTD, featuring electric windows, electric mirrors (not working), central locking, velour seats, a very tidy interior and a lovely engine thats been regularly serviced and well maintained. I have lots of service receipts for the car. It drives beautifully. The only complaint is the rear wheel bearings need replacing. It even passed the Controle Technique (roadworthiness test) here! There is 340,000km's on the clock, but only 200,000 on the engine, as one of the previous owners put the car in second gear instead of 4th at high motorway speeds and the original engine threw a leg out of bed. Turbo is fine, all ancillary engine components are fine. The rev counter does not work though, but I think its only something simple. The interior is very tidy. There's the normal amount of wear and tear to be expected on a car this age but its by no means shabby. There's a couple of bits and pieces such as the passenger side door handle needs replacing and the passenger door lock doesn't lock with the central locking, but does unlock.
Bodywise, there are 2 dents in the rear panel, one where the VW badge should be, and one on the corner. There are 3 alloys and one steel wheel on it, and there are no badges on it. The rear bumper has not been painted and is a bit crooked but not too bad. Its just badly mounted. After the crash, the front bumper, right wing and bonnet were replaced, as well as a headlamp and grille. The paint job was a disaster though. Theres some overspray on the swage line trim, and its like orange peel. Possibly some sanding, flatting and polishing would get it looking presentable though.
Overall this is a good car, and I'd love to see it staying on the road, but French beaurocracy being what it is, I just don't see this being possible.
