Your probably right, but this was my first beetle and I never really got to drive it after I restored it. For example its had the same tank of petrol in it for the last 7 years, as it only got used for a couple of weeks a year when I was back from Oz. I've not been back in 3 years so the brakes need re-doing. I might take your advice and just put some new wheel cylinders in and drive it!

Out of interest what would it be to narrow and weld in adjusters to that beam?

Cheers

Steve

bug1.jpgwell stevo...

heres one i did for myself. its narrowed by 6 inches. 3 inch of each side. its probably a bit narrow to be honest. i think 4 inch is more realistic. the turning circle is not nearly reduced as much.

theres 2 days work in doing a beam properly.

cutting out the centre section and welding in adjusters , cutting 2 inches out of each side and rewelding, shortening the leaves and redrilling them .
( i presume your putting the leaves back in and not running through rods.)
shortening steering arms.
youll probably want to push out the old ball joints and press in lowered ones too.
i presume your gonna run lowered spindles aswell.

id have to charge you 250 euro

count in the cost of two lowered shocks, caster shims, reverse tie rod kit , new bearings and brakes, the cost doesent be long creeping up.
plus the whole thing needs to be set for camber, and then tracked aswell. thats another 50 euro.

if your going this far, why not look at air ride? im working on my own set up at the moment. should be ready shortly.
