May I add one further point about Car Amplifiers.

In Dillon's defense I think it could be very easy for a non expert or inexperienced car stereo aficionado to read the spec on lesser brands of amplifier and fall for their overstated performance, like the one linked below

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_11915_Boss+D550.4.html

Not a good brand, but look at the 2200w Max claim, misleading to the novice.

It is also possible to have a 3000 watt system in RMS ,for sound off cars(which I used to fit ) it would be not unusual at all, especially when you run 2 or 1 ohm stable amps like a Hifonics or Rockford Fosgate that would be maybe 150 watts rms at 4 ohms, thats 300 watts rms at 2 ohms and 600 w rms at 1 ohm. times that by 4 channels and even 10 years ago you could squeeze 2400 watts out of an amp , although it would not be cool for long.

New amps put out crazy RMS figures into 1 ohm.

Sorry for the long explanation but I though you could give the kid a break.

Good man Dillon , at least you have an interest in more than xbox .

Don't know what a RD is but I'm a big guy and my 1979 Honda Cr 125cc would pull the front end with no problem with me on it in a straight line on a normal upshift and it was a 6 speed. I didn't know it had more than 5 gears until my nutcase son rode it! Bikes scare the hell out of me! Maybe that's why I'm thinking of buying a CR 250???

Hey Britt...... yep Hondas' legendary CR MX bikes......... but if you're gonna get one go the whole hog and get the CR 500............ mental piece of kit....!

In the midst of this mixed thread of bikes and radios maybe I should mention a friend of mine who fixes all such things electronic, just in case it'd be of use to anyone. He'll fix anything; the last time I was up getting my betamax video repaired he was restoring a full size space invaders machine for a bloke. His motto is "If you were told it was unfixable, call us." He gives a free no obligation estimate and all work is guaranteed. Thing is he's in Co Antrim, but you couldn't get a smarter and more switched on bloke! :D

Sounds good, is he any good on old valve radios?

My Dad has a few and it would be great to get some going for his birthday.

You are of course right, in fairness. You can wangle any figures you want though with a bit of creative maths. If you're talking 1 ohm (which you never are in professional audio, if you value your amps) then sure, you can be pushing mental wattage, but into 8 or 4 ohms which would be normal enough (and I have run 2 ohms on occasion, at a push) you'd be talking much more moderate figures. The EV SX300 speakers I refer to are 300 watts at 8 ohms, each. I dont claim to be an expert at car audio but I do understand the principles.

Incidentally, the most power Ive run at a gig was 36kW into an average 4 ohms. The amps took a 3 phase power supply. It was an 8 stack Nexo Alpha line array. Bonkers, but god was it fun to test!

That's a very handy contact. I come across old valve amps the odd time through work and haven't had a good contact to fix them since Audio Clinic closed.

Post up his details

Cheers

Ok, his name is Melvyn Carter and he's in Cloughmills, outside Ballymena in Co Antrim and like I said he'll repair or restore pretty much anything with a plug on it. The number is 028 2763 8158. From the South you'd have to put the right code in front of it, I'm guessing it'd be 004428 but I'm not sure :) I have an email address I'll hunt up an post tomorrow or Monday. Hope this helps. Tell him I sent you and maybe I'll get discount the next time I'm out! :ROFLMAO:

You can replace the 028 at the beginning of the northern number with 048 if you're calling from the south.

The radio arrived from Marv today. Thanks Marv! I got it installed and fixed the volume control which just needed a good clean. The Alpine speakers are very nice indeed! There's loads of welly off them, which is great cause my car is the only place I can really crank up the volume without annoying anyone.

Darragh, I'll send you my old one tomorrow too.
