Lads their is movement in the spiget shaft, not a huge amount, about 2mm from side to side.
Is that normal or does this mean bearing too?

I am no expert on vw's but 2mm is way to much play i doubt a new seal will last a month in it. You will need a newclutch too

looks like that input shaft seal is bunched.

I don't think 2mm play in the shaft is crazy considering it has no bearing supporting it when the engine is out. The pilot bearing in the gland nut is supposed to support the end of the shaft when the engine is fitted up. Replace the seal, clean out the bellhousing with carb/brake cleaner and either replace that friction disk/drive plate on the clutch or clean the hell out of it. Top up the gearbox oil and watch for future drips out the engine/gearbox join...

did you order a new input shaft seal? How about the flywheel/crank oil seal? Might be prudent to replace both while you have the engine out tracking down leaks...

Cheers Trev, the flywheel crack oil seal was changed last year when we did the engine. I've a input shaft seal here
from Jon White got during the week.

I have a spare crankshaft oil seal. I'll bring it with me tomorrow if I remember.

Cheers Steve - thanks for the offer, done already.

Hey Walshe, we're all in that boat at some point. I'm learning as I go along. This is only my 3rd time to remove a engine from the beetle, all be it not the most complex buts it's ice to learn it though :D.

Mikey are you sure that is Gearbox Oil and not engine Oil sprayed all over the bellhousing?

I know you said you changed the Crank Oil Seal last year but please make sure that what you are seeing is not engine oil...hence Crank Seal gone and not Input Shaft seal. ;)

It's certainly transmission oil, without a doubt.
One of the axle boots is needing replacement, I'll do the two while we're there.
