It's that time of year again for me to be buying another throw away car for my family. The current Polo needs front struts and wheel bearings which will cost more than the car is worth. If anyone has a front end off of a 98 Polo I'd be interested in those parts if in good shape.
I need a Polo with Power Steering ( I can swap the PS off of the current Polo if needed) and would like something with 5 doors if possible. I will also need direction on registering the car in the north. If anybody knows of such a car I'd be interested. Have money in Ireland waiting for a cheap run about. Would consider a Nissan Micra also. Want to spend under 700 euro if at all possible.:D

youd have to do mot ,if you where to bring a southern reg up,
but i think insurance usually covers for 30 days before re regging, so that might suit?

unless you don't mind the slow lane I'd avoid the micra. Caroline has a '00 1 litre (16 valve, woooo!!) and it's as slow as a wet week. It's miserable :(

It does have 5 doors, 5 speed box, power steering. Runs on the smell of petrol. Just horrendously slow :(

Would it be easier/cheaper to find a Northern registered one? Do you pay VRT on the swap from south to north?

copied this from a forum, sounds tricky!

"I recently brought a car from the south and registered it.
You will need a certificate of conformity from the manufacturer as it will be classed as an import. The cert is about £80. There should be no vat to pay as tax would have been paid when the car was new. You need to get it mot'd using the chassis number.
Get a form from the dvla, fill it in, take the mot and conformity cert, pay the dvla £80 registration fee, plus six months tax fee, then a few days later they will issue a numberplate, a tax disc, and paperwork to get the new plates made up. A few weeks later the log book turns up with you being the first registered keeper.
Your biggest hassle may well be insuring the car using just the chassis number.

Also cars from northern ireland to the uk and vice versa, no longer get the plates changed."

I was looking for a car for my girlfriend recently and actually found the best deals to be had at the smaller car dealerships. I didnt find many good bargains on the internet but when I did a bit of legwork I found a lot of dealerships with cars they had taken in from main dealers and were going to move on for small money. I got her a very clean 02 Opel Corsa for €850, serviced and with only 62000 miles on it. They had other cars too and that was only the second dealership I went to.

The 1L polo's came with the added option of pas back in the day. You had to pay extra for it. My 1st car was a 96 1l polo with pas. The first owner paid extra for that option. However, vw's basic models tended to comfort line models in the uk so maybe they came with pas as standard? I suppose since Britt has the pas already its probably not a deal breaker :) I dont really know the Northern Ireland car websites.

Britt I didn't have the best expierence with a 1.4 petrol polo. Their a great car, but I'd probaly go
for the 1.0 although it might be slugish. I had a 97 polo saloon 1.4 for my first car, it drank petrol
like nothing I'd seen. My dad's old Saab would be better than that thing. Traded it in pretty quick,
something wasn't right about it.

i have a 99 1L polo (with pas :p) and thought it drank petrol too, but i realised it all comes down to how heavy your right foot is! so on the back of this thread i decided to try never go above 2k revs. its seems to work. i know in that thread the car he's driving is a quattro, and i'm driving a polo, but still, every little helps!! it makes for boring driving tho, 60km/h in 5th...

Thanks everyone. I do like Polos and would enjoy a Lupo if the money tree was taller. I have an offer of a 94 5 door Golf TDI with a noisy wheel bearing with MOT until December for 450 STG or a 94 Audi 80 Avant TDI with a full years MOT but a dent in the drivers door for the same money. I don't know what tax and insurance group the Audi would be in vs. the Golf.

the golf would probably be cheaper to insure but the same to tax, same engine capacity. The rear wheel bearing is a half hour job, same style taper roller bearings as the bug/bus fronts.

Lupos are tiny!! How many people do you plan on carrying?
