I have a friend looking for an interesting old car for under a grand. He's not looking for a resto project so a runner (or **almost** a runner) would be ideal, he'd be up for a small job or two to get it going.

Anyway, he has a shortlist of a mk1 golf, Citroen CX, Alfa Romeo Sprint or Saab 900 so he's fairly open minded.

Anyone got any suggestions?

I have '90 MkII here he can have for half a grand, NCT until Jan, exhaust needs welding (split at the front) and the gearbox is complaining a bit but it's very solid, no rust and polishes up well. Daily driver until two weeks ago.

It's only ten years out... :D

How about a Saab 900i auto? Not quite to your requirement of pre 1980 but Its MOTd until July and driving well - you can literally step in, turn the key and drive it home without any problem. Its first owner had it in excess of 20 years. The interior is very clean. On the downside, the wheelarches and a couple of the door bottoms are a touch frilly but there is a rust free spares car that comes with it if you want it. This car originally came from the South so has never been on a salted road and the wings/arches and doors are good. It also has Saab alloys on it.
The car belongs to a friend so if you're interested please let me know. He'd be looking around £350 for the pair (what a bargain!) but is open to any negotiations! Make a bid and you may be surprised!

the whole idea of having a pre '80 car is that he can get cheap tax on it, regardless of engine size.

thanks anyway BL man

Ross, I'd say he'd be open to suggestions so long as it's pre '80, his short list was just a guide. I offered him a lend of the Derby until he got sorted but he wants something completely stock. He's not in a hurry it's just he normally drives motorbikes and the weather is getting to him...

Justin thanks for the offer but you already know what the problem is :) You'll have no problem shifting it on VAGdrivers at that price.

Trev, my dad bought a 9000 off a guy in Newcastle years ago.
I know him, he has a few 900's not sure if he's selling them.
I won't get to him for a few days and have no number for him.
I'll take pics ask and get details.

I'll pass on the tip on the 99, like Brian said though, any pics?

michael, can you find out the age of the 900s? Unless they're 30+ they'll be out of consideration. thanks :)

Trev, that guy in Newcastle with the Saab's is a friend of Damo's. Give him a shout and he'll give you a number or tell you more.
