I've just ordered one from a seller on ebay for £14, I suspect it might be coming from China despite being listed as 'UK seller', I'll let you know if it arrives.

£14 shipped and all? I wouldn't mind if it came from the moon for that price!!

After posting this I copped someone in Dublin selling them for €24. Not bad but not as good as £14.

The battery is shagged too, won't hold a charge, have to look for one of those as well.

My battery is shagged too, 30 minutes max - it's used as a desktop PC now (TBH with a 17" screen that's all it ever was).

I have a Samsung NC10 for mobile duties - 9 hour battery and fits in the glovebox. :D

This is a coincidence. My laptop is a year old today and it just helpfully informed me I need a new battery from Dell for €114. Hmmmmm. When I bought it it said you can use the battery 300 times before it wears out. I've used it 10 times max.

fuckin' Dell pieces of shit... I've seen so many problems with them. The best laptop I've had is my current Samsung... amazing quality.... just my two pence worth.

I don't know, they may have gone downhill in recent times but my Dell laptop is 5 years old now and pretty much bullet-proof.

Actually I think you're right. My boss has an old one that works pretty well even though it's been trashed. It's really in the last few years that I've come across a lot of issues with Dells, particularly with power supplies/batteries. Also, the build quality of the cases has gone downhill.

my 2 cents worth:

on one hand I bought my own Dell laptop late in 2006, the one in question above re the charger/battery etc. In July 2007 I had the motherboard and hard drive replaced under warranty. The battery gave up after almost two years. Then the dog ate the charger.

on the other hand I have a "work" Dell laptop that has been faultless for almost two years bar the battery shitting itself recently.

so the only real glitch (discounting batteries that have a lifespan anyway) has been the fairly serious issue with the first one and then of course the dog happened.

Draw your own conlusions from that...

I have a Gateway 2000 desktop computer that I bought in '98 too. Still going strong, despite multiple modifications and loads of house moves over the years. I has a 12Gb hard drive and a Pentium 3 450mhz processor. Slow as a wet week but I can't kill it!! ;)

I reckon as the circuits and chips get smaller and more intricate and more advanced, they also get more unreliable. That said, Ive had a Dell laptop since around this time last year and it really doesnt give me any grief. I am constantly using it and it runs on battery probably half the time if not more. I just keep the amount of things running on it in the background to a minimum, clean the dust from the vents every so often and it does fine.

Yeah, I have a Gateway desktop that I just can't give up, I dig it out every now and again and use it for a while,
it's running Linux mint now and feels like a Mac. :ROFLMAO:

I think I'm sorted now for a charger and battery for the laptop. Unless someone has a battery for the other one, a Dell precision M4300 that is...
