You'll need the SA registration document. VAT and duty will be paid on landing UK.

I brought my westy in through Felixstowe, paid all the taxes there and that just lef the VRT flat fee here.

BTW, when I brought the BMW in I didn't have the current V5 (seller was away on business when I picked it up) so I just gave the NCT an old one I found amongst the paperwork, it was from 1990 something. They were happy to accept something that looked official.

Why would I be paying customs in uk.

Its been shipped into Northern Ireland , through Belfast. Dealer has customs clearance ect, ect, ready to be mot,d and registered in the north....he has the necessary docs for this now.
If I take delivery of this van now, on South African plates......can I present all the dealers clearance docs ect..........pay whatever vrt now, and get it registered in the South.

Sounds confusing, probably because of the way I,m explaining it.........sorry for that.

Yes. It does not need to be MOT'd or reg'd, just cleared for taxes.

Easiest thing is to probably let him register it in the North and then you just import in from NI with the new V5. You can be sure then all documents are in order as all the hard work will have been completed by dealer I guess?

I think that is the simplest route to myself, thats what I,m going to propose when I talk to him about it.

I wonder what the other buyer of the SA Splitty thats Laoise bound did with his.:D

It also needs to be running and to have the appearance of something that starts and stops. They may ask you to start the engine but they won't ask to see it driving. It'll be done by your local NCT office but getting the official involved on the phone may be tricky.

You'll need an SAD (Single Administration Document) to prove duties have been paid

So basically I need no documentation to bring it into Ireland, until I want to get it registered. At what point is the VRT payable. And if there is no engine in it for 6 months, do the NCT accept that its undergoing work, and thats why the delay in vrt,ing

VRT is payable once roadworthy and presented for inspection. I've gone from 4 weeks up to about 10.

Its payable on entry (it can take a week or two to get an appointment so not really immediate). If its in the country for more than something like a month then a daily cumulative fine is imposed which is a percentage of the VRT fee. That's less of an issue with a classic than it is for a modern with a 8k VRT bill. They usually demand ferry tickets or similar to prove the date of entry but seeing as its coming over the border then a bill of sale with a suitably recent date might do the trick. They don't get that excited about classics as the revenue isn't big enough but its easier to anticipate their suspicions.

I doubt if they care that its undertaking work - they'd probably see that as an effort to avoid tax. Once its driving you're at the mercy of customs (Trev was stopped on his way to the VRT office I think) but I put up at least 200 miles on US plates and had no hassle (I had proof of my VRT appointment in any event).

So I,m best off to get it started asap and book a date for the vrt. And then let them send me home and say bring it back when its roadworthy???

Tim,

when i bought a vehicle in from the north i immediately went to pay import - €50 at the time - without the vehicle. I simply took log book and other details to the local office. They changed it. I was asked if i had the vehicle there. Told them it was off the road, as it needed restoring, but could probably get it on a trailer to bring down if needed. They weren't worried either way. The main thing they were interested in was chaging the log book, and paying the duty.

Maybe just give them a call.

Oh the simplicity of it.....................I,d safely say now I will have to give a DNA sample, Retinal scan, and Facial recognition picture.

How long ago was that, and were you changing residence as well at the time, as I see some straightforward process allowed, if you are moving.

Interesting tho.

They now do a cavity search as well, just to be sure.

At first I thought that said, 'fecal' - bit rough. But then read it again and was relieved :)

T'was about 6 years ago - and I wasnt moving residence.

I suspect things may be a bit tighter now - they want every fecking penny out of you. Best to take the DNA sample with you. Maybe the fical one, too - just in case.....
