My ‘72 fastback body is finally away for paint so lining up all the bits in prep for reassembly. The front windscreen I have is badly scratched so looking to get one in better nick before fitting. If you have/know of one appreciate if you can give me a shout. Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike,Sorry I can’t help you with the windscreen search for your Fastback.
But you might be able to help me. I have a ‘68 fastback. She’s in good condition but needs a paint job. Would you be able to recommend anyone good ? Thanks. Michael

What part of the country are you in Michael? I’m just outside Galway. Great to hear another type 3 finding it’s way back to use. Unfortunately I don’t have any recommendations worth giving…… story below.
Getting someone to paint an old car is getting next to impossible. I’ve stripped mine back to full bare shell with the body off and on a dolly, all welding done including shot blasting of all panels so just looking for someone to flat and finish and paint with me doing all the reassembly. Have gone to at least 20 different “recommended” body shops with no success, most say they won’t do old cars anymore as too much time, space and effort required, one or two said to come back in 1-2 years as are queued up. After more than 18 months after I am now on my third shop that said they would take it on in a few months but one after the other have come back to say not going to take it on as have stopped doing old cars. Car now with my last chance salon and has been 4 months in his shop with very little progress…. Not a good story I’m afraid.

Hi Karl, thanks for your reply. Yes I love the fastbacks. Got mine about 18 months ago. It’s in good nick but needs some paint.

That’s disappointing to hear, but I’m not surprised. I’m in Drogheda and am having the same experience unfortunately.

I called a few body shops but they seem to have an issue with being too busy or under staffed to do classic cars.

I’ll keep searching. Good luck with your windscreen search.

two guys set up a new place in Mullingar doing classic car resprays. An eircooled member has had his beetle done there, and he is happy with the result. You need to have deep pockets for a decent respray by a pro. Can you polish out the scratched windscreen

Thanks Tim. Scratches look pretty deep so not sure polishing will sort but may be my only option. Any recommendations on compound type/brand or technique? Thanks, Mike

Polishing compounds for head lamp glass may work on the screen. Some of the body polishing compounds would be worth a try if you cant source a windscreen. What is it, fasty or squareback

I know of 3 parts cars that have been doing the rounds over the last 12 months. One was a blue squareback heading down the midlands and back up to Dublin i believe. Another was a squareback in the kildare region that was on donedeal as a restoreable car which it was if you were ambitious about fixing it. There was also a black fastback for sale on donedeal, based in Dublin. If you pm me I can give you the details of the guy in the midlands that had some involvement with 2 of the cars, so may be able to put you on the right track. I have some fastback spares but no glass.
