Is that the wide plastic one with lines on top?do you need the lampholder/lense also?

No, its the metal hood and light holder that sits above the number plate.

I need the complete hood and lamp holder. My own was removed before

I owned the beetle.

I have one from '72 or '73 i think,it's metal and smooth topped,but i thought the later '76,'77 cars had a plastic one.

Cant argue with you there, I dont know what was on mine before i got it,
but this is what i need now. I dont really know what year it is,
but its the straighter type of them all.

Think it might be this one, as its the straighter type end.

My boot has a square indent where this fits in.

Not exactly which is the correct one to be honest.

It's the type in post #5 that i have pulled out already but i do think i have a later one somewhere. the one in post #6 is like a '67 one which would have a mid lenght engine lid .

Therein lies the confusion, as there was none fitted before,

Boot is this type with the slight square indentation.

Its the standard VW Decklid, No Louvers, Beetle Sedan 1968-1977 & Super Beetle Sedan 1971-1976

As far as i can tell.
