Makes the one Rocky is selling very cheap!!! :)

It really is - its very hard to judge the condition of the ones that crop up on Volkszone but a lot of them look ropey. Check BBT's prices to see how eyewatering Oval prices can be. I reckon that Rocky's car is causing sleepless nights for plenty of people

I've enough to do without getting into that kind of work, but as far as Ovals an early Vw's go, one thing I've learnt from mine is to buy as complete an original car as you can! Sourcing parts for them will turn into thousands!

I was bidding on Ben Byrnes rolling shell last year, glad I didn't get it, a few trips to Europe and the prices of real steel wings, bonnets etc, even interior parts, it all adds up! Mines a 54 so bonnet, doors etc are different to 56 etc an that a whole new lesson only Johan could explain!

agreed. I got the oval shell from Baz years ago for my subaru project and I regret not buying more parts from him at the time. It's taken ages and a small fortune to collect up the parts needed to fit it out. And at that, I'm not being 100% nit-picky about it. I'm just buying parts that will look correct-ish. A trainspotter will pick out the inaccuracies at 40 yards...

yeah prices for parts have really gone through the roof lately. i bought my 57 2 years ago now it was a complete car including original engine was running and driving(badly) when i got it and seemingly rust free from the outside at least. i knew it needed repairs to the front firewall and i thought that was all until i started digging around some more. it appears the car was sitting without a bonnet for some time so the front parcel tray was left exposed and was rotten around the corners under the tank , also the inner B pillars rusted out at the bottom caused by water running down through the semaphore openings i reckon. i`ve been looking for nos inner quarters for the past year or more they are all but impossible to find, same goes for a nos front parcel tray hence the need for a dry donor car i can cut these areas out of. i probably could have patched things up with home made repair pieces but i`d rather have it looking 100% if at all possible so i`ve waited for the right donor car to come along. this one on thesamba looks to be just what the doctor ordered. it`s a shame to cut up any 50`s vw but when the parts are needed to restore another one then i won`t feel too bad about it.

btw trev that subaru bug would look great with a ragtop don`t ya think ;)

already explored that avenue. You were in Oz when this happened:

then this happened:

and the oval section ended up in John (localised gravity anomaly ^^^ )'s Lexibug. At that stage I was going to keep the ragtop clip but sold it to Johan in the end to fund some part of the Audi resto...

BAZ everything is top notch on this car. I have pictures but not a speck of rust and all of the panels that have been replaced have been drilled at the factory spot welds. This guy was almost as anal as you! He did it as if he was going to do a 100 point restoration

that`s great thanks britt the pics i had sent to me looked really good but without your opinion it still seemed like a bit of a gamble. almost as anal is good enough for me lol. think there`s a taker for the roof so between us we should be able to do a deal and send ya back down the road to merced with your trailer!

thanks again britt you da man ;)
