Hello all,

I am newbee to all this so bear with me if I ask stupid questions !
I only joined the eircooled site last week

I just bought a t25 VW camper and love it - I picked it up on Saturday and rather than heading home ended up on a 2 night road trip .
a couple of questions though ......
  • is there a specialist VW mechanic out there I should be using or just a regular garage mechanic- I live on Northdside dublin city ?
  • how often should i be getting a service - once a year or 2 years ?
  • any advice for the DOE would be much appreciated
  • my leisure battery is reading at 12 v but no juice coming out of it - does this mean the altanator is gone ?
  • as regards bits of body rust can I get rid of these bits and just paint over them or do I have to paint the whole body
Any help would be much appreciated :D

Thanks

welcome to the nut house :tease:

there is some specialist garages out there but any older mechanic should be ok

as for service depends on how much ya use it i do mine yearly but drive it daily

for doe i would test it fix what they tell ya to fix do other as you use it

if alternator was fooked sure main battery would not charge either .. leisure battery reading 12v sounds
like it's getting a charge

as for rust depends how bad holes need new metal welded in surface rust can be ground back to
bare metal treated primed and painted

ps we love pictures here

Welcome to the club, and it's great to hear someone heading straight into using their van - that's what they are for after all :)

Just on the leisure battery part, are you using a digital voltmeter? if its only showing 12.0 volts you may have a dead cell in the leisure battery. A good battery, fully charged, should show at least 12.7v or more. I just changed ours as it wouldn't hold more than 12.3V, which meant the radio kept switching itself off.

Aahhh yeah - its holding 12.1 or 2 so I would say it is a dead battery cell -I will try get to a mechanic this week and see what he says .
I think its due an oil change aswell .

Have you or anyone else got any suggestiosn about radios for the van - the old one in it I dont want to take out as it looks great - but doesnt work ....crackle and longwave radio only
Does anyone use ipods or portable systems in their vans for music ????Internet radio options????

I will try get some photos up tomorrow .

Thanks

I would definitely recommend getting a "modern" radio/stereo. You can get decent ones for small money in Halfords or even Argos...

we left the old blaupunkt radio in the split just for the look and have a stereo mounted under the shelf with a USB port in the front of it so can connect iPods/iPhones and charge them at the same time.

im not very familiar with the inside/dash of the t25, so afraid I can't suggest where you could fit a second radio, but I'm sure some of the lads here can suggest something

I have new speakers in our van, but I have no idea what, if any, speakers were in a commercial vehicle in 1958 :p

I would be looking first to see could I connect to the existing speakers to save too much messing etc..

Depending on the type of connections, I would look to see could all wiring (power, aerial & speakers) could be disconnected from the back of the existing radio, and connected to your new head unit.. If so, away you go and the old radio just stays where it is as decoration.. :)

Yep yep was thinking of not getting into too much rewiring of the old speakers - I think 1 of them is dead .
Will check them out fully and se what the story is though .
Thanks
