I think that there is 1 more challenge for me at Bonneville. This year being the 100 year anniversary I think that I want to try to be one of the first to get into the 130 mph club with a 36 hp powered VW. I just got my 74 mm counter weighted and 8 dowelled stroker crank. Also I have a
Custom flywheel to match, 8 dowelled with a 36hp center with a 1600 face and 12v ring gear so that I can use a 1600 style clutch
Now to make the horse power to push my 66 Ghia over 130 mph I need turbo power and a turbo which can develop 20 pounds of boost or 1.7 bar.
I know nothing about turbos but Ireland has many more available used than California. If anyone can donate, sell, or send me in the right direction I'd really appreciate it.

a t2/t25 hybrid garret may just get you there, ans just about small enough for your engine.

Britt,

Could be a bit more complicated than a turbo but have you though about twincharging (a modern VW concept). Here is a guy in Germany that has put a supercharger on a 36hp engine, it would be great to see a supercharger and turbocharger combined like the modern 1.4 golf has.

A good supercharger to use is an AMR500.

Also I have a turbo kit for a dual port engine that uses a Weber 32/34 DMTT carb. Its a very hard carb to find but basically allows you to run the superior blow through setup without a computer. The kit I have runs on a stock 1600 motor with bigger barrels and pistons (92mm) to give 1835cc. It was good for a 1/4 mile time of 13.9secs. Here is a pic of the kit

It uses an IHI turbo from a Isuzu diesel truck so it spins up quickly, but since its designed for stock internals it gives boost up to 5000rpm. The turbo sits on the LHS of the gearbox, and the intercooler on the right side. I have the Malpassi rising rate fuel regulator, a locked out distributor and hoses for it all.

I would be happy for you to use all or part of this kit if its suitable for what you are doing. I can send it over to you from Australia, probably quicker than sending from Ireland. I have more info on the setup and what you can expect. You can just return it after you come over here for Lake Gardiner ;)

Cheers

Steve

P.S the turbo is a IHI RHB5 VJ11 if you want to look up the compressor specs. I also have a copy of Bob Tomlinsons Turbomania book, essential reading for turbocharging a VW motors. Happy to send this over too.

Another vid of the supercharged 36hp:-

Wow Steve! That's a very generous offer, thank you. Ill talk with you on Skype after Christmas. Yes I like the VW superturbo concept. I've ridden in Nickies Late Golf ant it's amazing. I'm very interested in your set up also. Have a Merry Christmas with your family.
