I'm planning ahead for Bonneville 2015 and want to mid mount a nasty big TDI engine in my Ghia. I need to know what cars the V engines came in and what I'd have to pay for one. I figure that I need somewhere over 400 bhp to get me over 200 mph in a Ghia. Gasoline or petrol power would take 500 plus hp. Any information of what cars they came in and performance upgrades would be gladly accepted.

I had a '03 A6 that had a 2.5l V6 TDi. Beautiful engine.

I'd be looking for A6 and A8 Audis, and for VW it'd be Passat, Phaeton and Touareg.

Dont just limit to VW Audi, or maybe you have to ?

Here is one that should be capable of getting close to 200mph , restricted to 155 for europe but very little needed to push that .

Straight 6 , twin turbo, very good easy revving engine.

Thahks for all of the responses. I'll be selling this years drag engine to fund the project. The V 10 really interests me because it's a 5 litre and it makes serious torque. What manual gear boxes will fit it? I'm limited with the height of tires that I can fit undre the Ghias rear arches so have to make up for it with gears. I want to keep it a VAG engine and the dirty diesel just suits my off kilter personality.

I had the loan of a touareg a couple of years back, the 5 litre V10. It had been re-mapped and was putting out about 330 bhp.
I took it up the motorway and was hitting 135 mph, the owner later told me he got over 150...

Imagine the weight difference between a full size Off-roader and your Ghia.....!

Yeh Britt..... you are Nuts...!!!!!!

I've heard that the 2000-2005 2.5 v6 TDI engines eat timing belts so make sure whatever you buy has a good service history and was running the right oil all its life.. Goes without saying you should buy a running doner car that you can test before transplanting..

Have a look at Darkside Developments, they are getting some serious power out of VAG diesels, mostly four cylinders though.

If you are midmounting the engine you could use an A4/Passat longitudinal gearbox.

Theres a list of all the VAG transverse gearboxes, ratios and final drives on ClubGti, surely theres similar info for the other type boxes somewhere.

It would be a shame not to tub the rear arches if you are doing such a mental build imho.

Wasn't Knk planning on dropping a mid-mounted TDi lump into his splitty at one stage? Might be worth sending him a PM, he might have had a lot of research done already?

No need to tub the rear Adam, that would only create drag. I plan on a custom chassis and will drop the Ghia body onto it. I might make a track car out of it after the Bonneville challenge, so it will have to handle as well.
