Engine for my T25

Hello eircoolies!
I'm lookin for some help sourcing a new engine for my 1987 T25, the old one is too small ( hills beat me every
time) AND has a bearing loose, so it's a total non runner. Either just an engine, or an engine and a human wiht
the ability to put it in! It's parked up in Greystones.

Thanks airhead. It's a 1.6 diesel, the van is a hightop and tho it's really efficient, it's just too small, so i had always wanted to change it. Then a bearing got loose in the middle of a trip so it has to be done anyway.

Ah yeah I was thinking it would be a 1.6 diesel. They are dog slow. You have a lot of choice as to what engine to go for. The 1.6 turbodiesel would be the most obvious step up but you could also think about a 1.9d or 1.9td if you want a good bit more power. I had a 1.6td syncro (4 wheel drive T25) and found the engine to be adequate. A good man to help you on this would be John Hickey in Kilkenny. His number is 051648397. Dog slow is right, jayzus. Thanks a million for all the info and numbers. I was thinkin a 1.9 would prob do it, to be honest if i can cruise happily at 55mph that'll do me grand, tho the fuel use between the 1.9 td and straight 1.9 is probably not a huge amount, the further the fill up goes the better! Thanks again for all the info, i'll get onto the kilkenny chap and see what the story is.

Yup! Prob cringey ones with me hanging out the side grinning but I might stick em up anyway! Have a mark 2 golf aswell that got written off before christmas ( before it got prettied up), need to do something with it soon...

If you don't want to do the work yourself I would recomend VW Spares or Cosyclassics.

since you have a 1.6 diesel then the 1.9 diesel would be an easier conversion, going to a 1.9td is possible but you would have to source the extra parts needed and would cost you can extra 500-800 euros, the 1.9 is good enough, mind you i'm doing a 1.9th conversion at the moment

this might sound stupid but does the the mk2 have diesel engine

go for a 1.9 its quick and easy to do once you have found the 1.9 you have all the parts you need to do the swap already on your 1.6 engine you will have to buy a small spigot bearing to fit into the end of the crankshaft .the accelorator arm on the diesel pump will also need to be modified or it will catch on the engine lid .it can be done in a day or at your leisure over a weekend. if your van has a 4 speed gearbox you will notice a slight increase in engine noise .
