Anyone looking for a mechanic with aircooled experience in the Cork area should give this guy a shout.
Richard Pledger - 086 3531812
He's based between maryborough hill in douglas & carrigaline.
He also does watercooled stuff including mercedes & audi. Nice lad & not too expensive either.

Camshaft - 2 worn lobes - 2 followers disintegrated, 2 cracked & the rest of them pitted. crank scored also, but that was probably that way anyways. Case full of swarf & paste. Oil pump not too good either. Bus back in storage. Hopefully I'll be doing a few jobs on it over the winter - new transmission boots, heater cables finally going to be sorted, might renew transmission mounts too. Debating whether to get rebuild or just get a new engine altogether. Leaning more towards a brand new engine. By feb/march 2010 I should have enough saved to go either way!

I'd say go for the new engine. That engine is bunched. Sure the swarf alone would have done damage elsewhere too. You'd be replacing everything. You could see if you could get a good used engine from someone though if you're on a tight budget, and give it a mini overhaul before putting it in.

Yeah, mechanic said as much. He's familiar with volkspares engines too (which mine was) & wasn't surprised to see what twas like inside...
Pistons, barrels & heads all ok tho. Budget is always gonna be tight, but a new engine means peace of mind, & it was something i was always going to do anyways at some stage. Might even go up to a 1776 for a little more power...

Not necessarily. I reckon a used but original proper VW engine instead of a replica such as a volkspares or whatever would give me more peace of mind. See if you can get something that hasn't much mileage on it. €1600 + VAT is expensive!

No - not volkspares. Thats what the previous owner had in it. Don't want recon either. Brand new & run in properly.
I don't mind having it off the road for as long as it takes me to get one either.

as a man once said...
VW Mexico engine is the only way to go - those recon "gold/green/pink" engines are shite.

when you ask for the discount they always say "it's already taken off" and you pay what they asked you for in the firstplace. I've found the GSF discount to be an urban myth so far...

Its not that bad
you just have to ask about it before they start inputting anything on the computer cause they can't be arsed to enter it a second time

There's a 1776 in my split and i find it great, no great improvement on top speed but the extra power on take-off and on hills is great.

yeah, not too pushed about the speed at all. bit of extra power is always handy!
