I had 3 of them and never had a break down all 1.8 8v GTi's and I drove them hard, commuting 108 miles each way to work so I put some serious miles on them. I did have a linkage rod on the gearbox pop off but knew instantly what happened and popped it back on.

Totally agree, although i've never driven a 16v, Mk2 golfs in any guise including dsl. are great.
