I've decided to go and put the camper up for sale.
It's a 1972 crossover bay. It came from the factory to the UK (RHD) with early bay bumpers and low front indicators but it has the late bay tall rear lights and front disc brakes and that's the way it is today, stock height and all.
It has been restored and rust repaired but of course to it's original colour 'Neptune Blue' allover. Lots of new (genuine VW where available) parts: cab doors, rear corners, tailgate, sills all new seals and wheel arches. This was professionally done in the last 12 months by Tom Roberts in Sligo.
It's a Dormobile conversion, again pretty original inside, the only addition being a gas/12v fridge. I've changed the front seat covers and door cards (DB Cartrim) so the inside has been freshened up to match the outside.
It won the (non member) best in show prize at the Clare Classic and Vintage Car Club show in Ennis a few weeks ago.
It comes with lots of history. There were two previous owners in the UK (a father and son) so it was in the same family since '72. It's been all over europe 276k miles and it's going strong on a 1641cc, it's 4th engine. Engine 3 didn't last long I'm told. You never get that kind of history when there's half a dozen owners.
The suspension in the front is currently too soft (possibly broken torsion leaves) and the front beam is not 100%. I've sourced a top quality 2nd hand front beam (from a dry State) which will be installed with all new ball joints, needle bearings, good full set of torsion leaves and gas shocks all round before the van gets it's new owner.
Genuinely, there's been no expense spared on this vehicle and vans of this quality are few and far between.
The van is for sale at 16k euro o.n.o.
I'll post photos over the weekend
