NOW SOLD .....What is it? That’s what everyone asks! It’s the ultimate fun summer motoring! My 1972 VW Type 181 or Trekker is perfect for the VW enthusiast, military vehicle enthusiast or the person who wants to have the coolest beach cruiser in Ireland!
Originally LHD, I bought it in 2014 & had it professionally converted to RHD. There is an adjustable front beam, it’s lowered one spline at the rear and the 1300cc engine is 100% reliable. In 2020 the Trekker got new discs & pads. I fitted a Budweiser beer tap on top of the EMPI Trigger Shifter and there is also a 3 spoke sports steering wheel. The original army spec interior is in excellent original condition.
Externally, there are 2 flagpoles on the army spec nudge bar. There are 2 sets of wheels going with the Trekker; original rims & 5 spoke Radars with nearly new tyres.
The original front wing was dented when I got it but I’ve sourced a very good original wing. The engine lid has a little rust at the bottom so rather than repair I sourced an excellent original one.
Both the convertible frame & outer cover are perfect. The windscreen folds flat, the side windows are removable and the doors come off making this the ultimate fun in the sun summer cruiser, and the best part is the legendary VW reliability.
Being almost 50 years old there are a few points to note. From what I can see, there are a few areas that will require some TLC over time such as 2 small rust points on the driver’s side & 1 small area on the rear passenger floor. These aren’t structural & haven’t stopped me having fun with my Trekker in 7 years! The dynamo light is on & the oil light isn’t working but that’s it.
If you’re looking to make jaws drop at Cars & Coffee then look no further! Drive it home today & use it as-is this summer in its military guise of grey primer and matt green. If you know VWs then you know this Trekker represents excellent value for money for one of these extremely rare VWs in Ireland & the UK, especially as it is now RHD.
This isn’t a fire sale so I’m happy to keep the Trekker in my garage where it has lived since 2014
€56 road tax & €180 fully comp insurance.
