This Beetle was originally owned by VW Ireland or MDL as they were known back then. MDL being Motor Distributors Limited. According to my contact in MDL who checked it out for me, the '71 was produced as part of a batch of 24 green cars, of which 9 were sold to VW Leasing, a subsidiary of MDL. This car was registered on May 28th 1971. The colour is Elm Green (Corbell/IIF P0308215). The invoice number was 51997 and the model number was 60686 which was basically a production number. They have confirmed it still retains its original engine and I have the original key number also.
I have this Beetle for 3 years, prior to that it was under the care of Wayne McCarthy who bought it in 1991. The last tax disc shows April 1991 as the last taxed date before I began to re-tax it. The Gardaí thought I was pulling the piss when I went in with my form looking to get it stamped as being off the road for 21yrs
The Beetle arrived into Wayne's ownership after being owned by the relative of one of the MDL employees so it was obviously offered to staff after MDL had finished with it. He didn't do much mileage at all as it had only 58k miles on it when Wayne parked in 1991. I found his 'service notes' on the back of a party invitation in the glovebox!
Thanks to Beag & Gritz for their help in getting the Beetle out of the shed and back out into the sunlight again. http://www.volksworld.com/blog/cathals-blog/lost-and-found-cathal-unearths-two-beetles/
VW Spares replaced almost all perishable parts in order to make this a safe car after its long hiatus. I also fitted new tryes after Rez gave out to me for driving on 21yr old tyres!
I drove it around for 2yrs with its faded paint but then I gave it a polish and the old paint up really well so now it's got shiny paint as well as flaking paint giving a weird but cool look to it. Everything is original to how it left the Naas Road factory in May '71. It hasn't ever been painted and even the wiring and connections are like new, having their VW stamps on them. It's a totally untouched early late model Irish made Beetle.
It's not perfect though, there is rust. The rear quarter panel is rusted out as there was a leak in the roof and water dripped down the wall and sat under that corner but apart from that it's not bad. It could use a heater channel too at some point.
The interior is what blows me away - it cleaned up so well. Headliner has slipped at the back but that's easy to get back in place. The top of the rear seat is cracked but I have a new TMI cover to go with it. The door cards are like new, as are the floor mats, front seats and carpets. At less than 60k miles from new, the engine as you would expect is a belter.
I'm only asking €2,900 for this untouched original Beetle with a very interesting past.
Where it sat for 21yrs
Mac loved it
'Service notes'
It was a real barn find......dust and bird poop
