I have this 1600 engine here that I'm not going to get too involved with as it's not something I *need* at the moment and I already have too many projects
it's a 1600 twin port with dog-house oil cooler. single hot-spot pre-heat pipe.
it's got the universal case with rear engine mounting bar for an early bay fitted. Pop it off and it'll suit a beetle
it's complete but looks in a sorry state as all the tinware is surface rusty.
it has a new(er) alternator with internal regulator
34PICT3 carb that could use a little freeing up
SVDA distributor also in need of a little lubing up.
thermostat present
all standard tin present, right down to the "Hoover bit". Also includes the early-bay specific tin that goes over the gearbox and round to the cylinder head tins. No rear tin over the exhaust
exhaust and exchangers fooked with rust.
It has a re-stamped "AS" engine code with an "X" at the end, indicating it was a VW factory exchange engine at one stage. I don't know any more of its history than that.
The reason I'm calling this a "rebuild candidate" is that I've removed all the tin and the cylinder heads to find the exhaust valve on cylinder #3 broken. There doesn't appear to be any damage to the combustion chamber or the piston but the broken valve plus the amount of crud inside all the cylinders and the fact that I think the rings are catching inside the cylinders preventing a full revolution by hand mean that it'll need a little love before being put back into service.
So, with that in mind, it's for sale cheap at €150 for the lot. Ideal as a core to send off to your friendly local engine builder oop norf for the treatment while you still use your existing engine.
