They're only a gimmick, they hide the symptoms without solving the actual problem... IMHO.. :D

I need it for next winter (carb iced last winter which was a "bit" cold!)
Unfortunately CoolAir do not have them any longer (they try to find another source).

what kind of air filter are you using? Is the stock warm air hose in place?

I'm with the lads, they're a gimmick.

It's a pancake air filter.
The engine has no warm air hoses.

there's yer problem.

Get a stock VW airbox/oil bath filter and run the warm air hose up from near the exhaust. Cabletie/wire the flap in the filter housing to only pull air from the warm air hose and you'll be fine. Swap it back to the pancake when the weather improves if you must.

Thanks loadsabuses for the information.
You are certainly right trev; an oil bath filter + pre-heating hose would do the job properly but some "fiddling" with my exhaust would be necessary. That's all reasonable.
But: I like how my engine looks (it's a Baja after all). And because it has no proper heating I don't use the car often in winter. But sometimes when there is fresh snow I enjoy having a run. And in these occasions this IMDU-gimmick would make sense for me, it at least would improve the running of the engine.

do you look at your engine when you're hooning around in the snow? Would anyone know how your engine "should" look in it's summer clothes if you were to run a proper air filter and warm air feed for the two days a year that you want to drive in the snow?

No offence but you would be pissing your money away on snake oil. The air filter would be a 10 minute job to swap over and back to the pancake.

Is there any specific place the warm air hose should should be connected to near the exhaust or does it just go through the hole in the tin and draw warm air from around the exhaust? The end of mine is not connected to anything specifically and I was worried about it drawing in excessive dust and dirt from below the tin up into the filter

there is a special "stove pipe" that is supposed to be fitted to direct air coming off the cylinders up into the air filter. It's often forgotten about and not replaced after an engine is put back together for whatever reason. So a lot of bugs just pull warm air from around or near the exhaust which, while not as ideal as the stove pipe is still way better than nothing.
You are likely to draw in more dust than with the stove pipe but that's hat your air filter/oilbath is for, right?

Think about it though, they used the same air filters here as in dusty Africa and they were fine. How much dust do you reckon you'd draw into the warm air pipe in damp auld Ireland?

the stovepipe is item #24 in this picture:
