Well Lads! Just removed my engine for the first time... as Muir states 'there are two types of VW owner those who have dropped their engine and those who will'... Got the engine up on the bench without too much bother... then noticed! A previous owner has removed the thermostat and flaps set up from the engine! (which is a new Brazillain 1600 Type1)

Does anyone know where I might get a thermostat/flaps set up orreplacement 1600 fan shrowd?

I know the engine will run without this but dont want to cause damage and wear without reason!

Thanks

far as I can see a thermostat either works or it doesn't, no in-between.

As for your brake fluid reservoir, my customer services team are looking into it... :ROFLMAO:

The thermostat can be faulty , in the sense that it doesn,t operate within its range , at the correct time, or speed. I have such a thermostat, it works, but takes a long time to fully open. Old age I suppose. When I saw the price of the new one's I was a bit stunned as well.

I,d actually forgot about the res...............I,m sending Frankie four fingers around to your house for tea;)

I don't think the Brazilian engine would have come with the thermostat in the first place - I've a new VW Mexico Type 2 1600 engine, and it didn't come with the mounting point for the thermostat bracket... I would have had to tap the case to fit the bracket, which would have invalidated the warranty.
I went for the next best option - fit the flaps in the fan housing, wired (or welded) open - this will give the directional supply of air over the heads at higher temperature, but you'll obviously lose the benefit of the warming effect of the flaps being closed at start-up

Hey Trev.. definately interested in flaps set up if you have one!

Compleat.. I think you are right, there is no mounting for a thermostat on the engine case. Was going to do as you suggest... tap the case and fit the bracket. Im afraid Donegal isnt quite as balmy and hot as the Brazilian or Mexican climates these engines were built in! Any extra heat in the morning to get the oil going is needed!

Thanks to all for your help as usual!
