I'm doing a clearout of my garage and this is one of the victims. It was originally fitted to a Spitfire and so has a modified sump to clear the Spitfire steering rack but is originally a TR6 engine. The sump is baffled which isn't standard.
When I bought the car it was misfiring and burning oil (and fuel at a huge rate) so I rebuilt it as follows:
Rebore to +40 + cross hatch hone
New pistons + rings (obviously
)
New heavy duty bearings
Deck & head skimmed
Head converted to unleaded
New TR5 PI camshaft (not a regrind)
New rocker shaft
New oil pump
All new seals
Rebore, hone & crankshaft measurement done by High Precision Engineering in Tullow. Head rebuild done by Loftus Farrell in Dublin
I also rebuilt the twin Stromberg carbs - new needles, jets & seals.
The engine was showing an even 170 psi on all cylinders when I ran it after rebuild. Its covered less than 100 miles since the build and has been carefully broken in.
I have receipts to prove all work done & parts bought. I did the work three years ago and with the sterling exchange rate then, it stands me just under 2000 euro.
I'm looking 700 euro which is a good price - the cost of converting the head to unleaded is almost 300 euro (assuming that you can find someone to do the work - the valve seats are close together so its not straightforward), likewise the camshaft is worth approx 200 euro on its own. A rebuilt engine from a Triumph specialist using cheaper parts is stg£1200 before transport - the engine weighs 350lbs so they're not cheap to post
It won't fit a VW but if anyone knows of someone who'd be interested in the engine then I'd be interested in having more floorspace in my garage.
