Have you asked the seller if he had to have it NCTd or DOEd? Is there a disk in the window?

Anyway, what year is it? If it's older than 1984 you can just get it reclassified as "vintage/veteran" for tax purposes and avoid the NCT altogether.

If it's newer than 1984 and it's on either commercial or PSV (Public Service Vehicle) tax then AFAIK you'll have to have it DOE'd and might have issues insuring it privately. You'd have to thrash it out with the insurance company. If you were to have it reclassified (for tax purposes) as a private vehicle then you might be liable for VRT as commercials (and maybe PSVs?) get a cheaper rate of VRT on day one compared to private vehicles.

I think you need to get a look at the log book for yourself...

Thanks Trev,as far as i know its classified as a private tax ,well I've had a look at it and theres no disc in the window ,the log book says private .8 seater its post 84. I entered the reg in the motor tax website and the tax rate is as per a 1600 vehicle. So am I right in thinking I need to get it NCT'd?

It be private tax and will need an nct,I think they have changed the classic tax to pre 1980 instead of the 20 year rule.if your under 25 you will find it hard to get classic insurance and most insurance company's won't insure a vehicle more than 20 years old.its a real can of worms if your under 25 so if you are,do your homework or you might end up with an ornamental Vw.. :)

Post 1980 , its for Doe surely.

Taxation of Vintage & Veteran Vehicles
  • A vehicle is classed as a vintage/veteran once its 30 years old from date of manufacture and a concessionary rate of motor tax applies
  • Tax renewal form must be fully completed & signed ensuring insurance details are entered.
  • Appropriate fee
  • No NCT/CRW required for pre 1980 Vintage Vehicles.

cheers folks, Shifty the vintage tax is 30 years old , I have an 83 golf and its vintage /veteran tax since last year .Pre 80 is for nct excempt..Way over 25 unfortunately , I'm looking for a van to drive straight away ,but I dont wanna buy it if I cant tax it straight away ,thats why i was thinking of buying it if I had to nct it,at least I can tax it and then get it tested afterwards. unlike doe, book it in,retest it ,new owner,so wont have log book in my name ,doe gets sent to last reg. owner ,then he sends it to me. yawn.

When I first got my t25 I was able to tax it privately and I didnt need a test on it (well they never asked me for it anyway) .it wa a spsv on the log book but was previously taxed private. Ive since converted it to a van with just three seat in the front so have it doed and tax privately
