Currently looking at a T2 bus, turns out, after a bit of investigation, its from Indonesia. Just wondering if anyone had any experience with Indonesian buses, I read somewhere there was a fuss a few years ago about them coming into UK and not being what they should be. Would you avoid or what...

I assume they are Aussie Kombis, AF engine code (is this Austrailia code) and 2252101698 chasis code for a 1975, on Samba the last chasis code is 219 to 24a for 1979, would austrailia have their own chasis code system? or would this be the model code (225 - Cargo doors right, sunroof, left hand drive, full middle seat). Hope it isn't model no. cos its a RHD, walk through with no sunroof....

Any help is much appreciated, or any links to other sites where this might have ben discussed previously..

Cheers, Phil

Is this a Bay or a Split?

Some Indonesian buses are good, some are questionable. Yumos VW in Jakarta do a good job, a guy over here in Oz just imported one (http://www.yumosvw.com/). You get a lot of Brazilian Bays turned into splits, so you'd better check for all the Brazilian signs, like an inspection cover for the fuel sender in the rear parcel shelf etc.

If its an Aussie split, it will have MKA followed by a few numbers stamped on the left hand side of the chassis in the engine bay. MKA stands for Martin and King Australia, these were the mob that built up the CKD kits from Germany.

The AF engine number is just a standard prefix for a 1600. There was no special numbers on Aussie engines.

Cheers

Steve

Cheers for replies, only looking at bus cos it is cheap, can't afford Cali bus.

It's a bay bus, has fairly new paint so worried about what's under it. U hear stories about coke can welds. Don't have any history on it yet. One of those 'sellin it for a friend' jobs so fairly suspicous.

the 21 chassis code refers to a panel van, 22 was a conbi i.e. originally had side windows, the third digit refers to the model year, so your 225 code is correct for a 75 bus with side windows.
Like any bus, you should view it and judge it on its own merits. There are good and bad buses coming form any area, including Califorrnia. you'll always get people who will just do a quick fix, to keep a bus going or to sell it on. go and have a look and see what you think
thanks joe

Agreed! ^^^ I can't tell you how many times people send me pictures of cheap Calif. Buses from the samba and say what do you think of this. 9 times out of 10 I know the bus and it's previous history or can show them by the way the pictures were taken or lack of them exactlt WHY the bus is so cheap.

Have an indo 53 barn door down here at the moment its very solid looking but has sooo many wrong parts fitted. not to mention a few missing chassis parts. . they spray them with a very heavy primer filler all over then just sand it down till the bus looks straight its up to a quater of an inch thick in places!!! . i wouldnt buy one without going to see it even more so if it has fresh paint on it .

Ah, now it makes sense, didn't notice that. Only oddity I noticed was what looks like rust coming through the outer sill under sliding door.
