air won't lift it? they use air suspension in 40ton trucks. Surely someone makes a strong enough air suspension system? Or adapt something intended for a heavier car like a Merc or Audi?

Air suspension/ air lift kits can be built/modified/ adjusted to lift anything with enough knowledge/ experience. in the uk there are companies who can help/ supply you with all you need.In the states or australia they are big into into it. try ebay.com not ebay.co.uk or paddyirishman ebay.ie.
Or if you are clever enough and research it enough i am sure you could use the lift bags out of a p38 range rover which are probably the simplest of them all, and most likely the cheapest. the compressor for these can be troublesome and they have a control module (ecu) which again gives a lot of trouble. so much so there is now kits available to replace the suspenion with the every day spring and shock set up. The x5 bmw and latest model landcruisser also have air suspenion set ups. the s class merc too but its more an airshock/ airstrut in them, big bucks when they go wrong i know of cars being parked up over the years because of the blown suspension. Plus they are a much taller unit than the others. At the end of the day if mr. dosh is about the easyest and most likely best thing to do is. To do it once and do it right, have a kit put together for you by the people who know what they are doing.

I've done the air before, but the customer requested hydraulics as he said was too heavy. I've made my own rear bracket system, etc and will ask again about reasons for persistence with hydraulics. Should have pushed the air as its something I know more about than the hydros 8) cheers lads 8)

I had hydraulics on my car before, and let me tell you they are horrible, I had a 2 pump 4 dump setup, the ride quality isn't good at all, to bouncy, I would have to lift the front end and drop the back just to drive, and I still hit my head on the roof. Hydraulic equipped cars need a lot of reinforcing, I had to reinforce the rear end, the trailer arms, the back frame had to be reinforced, a lot of work, its hard on the ball joints. That's not even getting to the maintenance, the cylinders leaked, hoses blew, creating a mess with the fluid everywhere, not counting all the battery's that needed charged all the time. just a lot of up keep, I since then moved to the air ride suspension, no maintenance but draining the tank, hardly any upkeep, ride quality is better, not as fast as hydro's, but hey its still slammed.

air can handle any weight it's used on 40 foot's and buses ........
