Dumb question but how do you identify early and late?

Early and late 1200 engines have very few common parts (25-30hp engines and post 61). Piston and cylinders sizes are all different. Later piston and cylinders wont be compatible with early cases or con rods as gudgeon pin diameter is also different. We usually recommend check all sizes to get the right replacement. There are also many early cars fitted with later engines.
