I was talking to you at Jon Whites PJ and you were saying that it's a great car. The snow is gone by now so I'd be hanging onto it if I were you. The last two years have been about as bad as they come in Ireland so I doubt you'll have this worry next year. You'll be wishing you had the golf back once you start paying extra money on tax and fuel that the Jeep would require. Invest in some snow tyres, keep your revs low and the Golf will take care of you.

Definitely snow tyres on the golf. Much cheaper option than running a jeep alright. I know someone recently put a set under a mazda3 & he cannot believe the difference its made. 180euro plus 40euro for a set of manky looking secondhand steel rims.

What are them little Suzuki Jimny's like in snow? Thats what I was thinking of getting. Are they 4WD? They are only 1.3.

And if I decide to keep the Golf where is the best place to get snow tyres? I had snow tyres on the Beetle last year that I got from Beetlejuice and they made a huge difference.

Jimni's are hairdressers cars! How's your cutting? :p
They're 2 or 4wd (selective) but I'd still think there's no need for you to sell the Golf.
Sorry to go off track if this is still a "for sale" thread (?) but I'd weigh up your options before you sell. The Golf is a good car and I'd personally pick it anyday (even on solid ice) over the suzuki.

get some 15" steel rims to suit your car and fit the snow tyres you already have to them so you can use them on the golf. Problem solved. :)

Where would I get rims to fit the Beetle tyres with the correct stud pattern for the golf?

Golf TDIs are great in the snow, just take your feet of the pedals and it will drive itself.

In fairness to the Golf the other night there was a woman in a bigger VW car (I'm not sure if it was a Jetta or a Passat) stuck on the hill up to my house, she had to get towed up. I made a run at it in the golf and I got up it no bother. And the road was in a pure sheet of glass, probably as bad as it will ever be.

Would be a stupid move to sell the Golf. Maybe for a commercial land cruiser yeah but just get snow tyres.

Most of it, is in the driving.

That prob had more to do with the driver than the car and i don't mean that its because shes a woman!! some people haven't a clue how to drive in snow/ice, so can't blame the car. I can't imagine the suzuki would be a patch on the golf.

some versions of that model of golf/bora came with 15" steel wheels, they shouldn't be hard to find. If you're going to keep the car I can keep an eye out for a set of steel wheels for you. The beetle tyres would fit straight on them and the tyre height is the same between the beetle and that model Golf so your speedo would read right.

I believe in snowy parts of Germany car owners are obliged to keep a separate set of winter tyres that have to be fitted by a set date every year. You'd just be becoming more German ;)

Your Golf already has 15" steels ( I think..) , find a nice set of alloys for the summer, the standard ones sell cheap enough when owners want to go bigger.
